Located in the heart of the Niagara Frontier, Lockport is the county seat of Niagara County and home to a history that built the rest of New York State.

As a prime example, the Erie Canal was authorized in 1816 and reached Lockport in 1824 with the locks being completed a year later. These original locks were given the name "Flight of Five" for their unique stepped structure, and still remain today, as a spillway for the canal.

The City of Lockport has a number of properties on the National Register of Historic Places and is also home to the widest bridge (399' wide) in North America, which spans the canal just southwest of the locks.
